Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): DANOSA’s Commitment to a Better Future

In an ever-evolving world where environmental concerns and social responsibility take centre stage, the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) stand as a beacon of hope and guidance for organisations striving to create a positive impact. The SDGs are a set of 17 global goals designed to address the world’s most pressing challenges, from poverty and inequality to climate change and environmental degradation. As a forward-thinking company deeply committed to sustainability, DANOSA aligns itself with several of these goals, working tirelessly to contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future.

Embarking on Sustainable Development: Our Updated Approach to SDGs

In alignment with our established practices, we have undertaken a comprehensive review and refinement of our approach to assessing DANOSA’s impact on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) last year. This rigorous evaluation has led to an expansion in the scope of our impacts, surging from 97 in the previous year to 112. These impacts, both positive and negative, span the entire spectrum of our value chain and encompass real-time and potential effects.

To identify these impacts, we meticulously considered a multifaceted array of factors, including insights into our production and management processes, our wealth of experience in industrial operations, adherence to pertinent legal and regulatory requisites, the social and environmental implications of our actions, and our strategic business blueprints, among other significant parameters. This approach facilitated the appraisal of these impacts through the their significance in terms of sustainable development and DANOSA’s influence in shaping them.

Our renewed commitment to this endeavour is underscored by the fact that these impacts resonate with 13 out of the 17 SDGs. Yet, given the intricacies of impact magnitude and appraisal, we have singled out the following SDGs as our PRIORITY areas, acknowledging their collective potency, which accounts for nearly 70% of our cumulative influence:

Notable shifts in our 2022 assessment are as follows:

  • The impacts of the solar power plant have changed from potential to actual, as the facility became operational in August 2022.
  • We have added the potential impacts associated with developing a roadmap for DANOSA’s medium and long-term energy transition, which started in 2022, particularly due to the possibility of installing new renewable energy sources to replace the significant levels of LNG gas consumed. We are considering the possibility of solar-thermal, biomass and heat electrification by expanding the photovoltaic panels.
  • The actual impacts of the refurbishment side of the business have increased due to all the measures developed in 2022. We have also included the positive impacts of renovating the organisation’s own buildings, which began or was carried out in 2022.
  • We have added new impacts to the social pillar: one negative associated with the worsening work conditions in some manufacturing positions due to climate change (as summer 2022 was extremely hot and long compared to previous years), and other positive impacts associated with talent management, employing vulnerable groups and small social benefits to help with inflation.
  • We have also extended the impacts of groundwater consumption to other uses, as we significantly reduced watering in 2022.

As we produce our updated assessment, it reflects not only our unwavering dedication to sustainable development but also our readiness to embrace evolving paradigms and emerging opportunities. Guided by our priority SDGs and driven by the spirit of progress, DANOSA is resolute in navigating the path toward a more equitable and sustainable future.

SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production: A Cornerstone of our Mission

For DANOSA, the SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production, takes precedence due to its profound impacts on the company’s operations and the world at large. Accounting for 30% of all impacts and a significant proportion of negative impacts, SDG 12 drives DANOSA’s commitment to sustainable practices. The company proudly manages 18 of its impacts and identifies 14 more opportunities in line with this crucial goal. Virtually every facet of DANOSA’s management systems and operations is intertwined with SDG 12, underscoring the company’s dedication to recycling, efficiency, waste reduction, and environmental management. As a manufacturer, DANOSA’s focus on SDG 12 is intrinsically woven into its purpose and infrastructure.

SDG 13 – Climate Action: Our Climate Resilience

With climate change looming large as a global challenge, DANOSA recognises the significance of SDG 13 – Climate Action. Responsible for 17% of all impacts, SDG 13 underscores DANOSA’s dedication to energy efficiency and renewable energy production. By directly addressing energy-related impacts and pursuing sustainability strategies, such as their energy transition towards decarbonisation, DANOSA strives to be a positive force in the fight against climate change. This goal resonates deeply with the company’s commitment to efficiency, renewable energy, and the development of sustainable products.

SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth: Our Social and Economic Impact

Embracing the values of SDG 8 – Decent Work and Economic Growth, DANOSA recognises the power of business to drive social progress and job creation. Accounting for 13% of all impacts, this goal underscores DANOSA’s influence on people’s health and well-being through the management of chemicals and sustainable business growth. As DANOSA actively engages in recycling, renovation, and chemical management, it contributes to generating wealth, employment, and skills while prioritising the social pillar of sustainability. This alignment reflects DANOSA’s holistic approach to business, where economic growth and social responsibility go hand in hand.

SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities: Our Role in Enhancing Urban Living

In the realm of urbanisation and community development, DANOSA finds resonance with SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities. Despite being fourth in priority, this goal deeply resonates with DANOSA’s traditional role in enhancing building comfort and habitability. As 80% of the impacts identified in SDG 11 are positive, DANOSA’s commitment to sustainable construction and market awareness shines through. By promoting renovation and offering products designed for sustainable construction, DANOSA contributes to the creation of resilient, comfortable, and sustainable urban environments.
